Between 1300 and 1600, Nuremberg developed into a globally networked trading centre. Economy, politics, art and culture were closely intertwined. Using fascinating artistic objects, the catalogue traces the city’s expanding networks from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
Its success as an international centre of knowledge and innovative industrial location enabled Nuremberg’s cultural flourishing during the time of Albrecht Duerer. However, the exploitation of resources in mining, the boom in the arms trade and early colonial activities were also central prerequisites for this rise. The catalogue sheds light on these little-researched facets of the city’s history and critically reflects on Nuremberg’s role in an increasingly globalised world.
