Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) is internationally the most renowned French artist of the 20th century. The exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Musée Matisse as part of the city partnership between Nuremberg and Nice and showed the artist's books "Jazz" and "Pasiphaé", two central works from Matisse's late works created in Nice and Vence. The presentation was complemented by 15 black and white photographs by Brassai and Cartier-Bresson, among others, which provide an insight into the artist's life and work on the Côte d'Azur.
The focus of this exhibition and the accompanying publication, which was preceded by new research, was Matisse as a book artist and his relationship with Germany. Matisse had visited Germany, including Nuremberg, for the first time in 1908 and established close contacts with the Expressionist avant-garde. The artist's book "Paisphaé" in particular illustrates the French artist's engagement with the German press printing movement, which is highlighted for the first time in the exhibition and this catalog.
